Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance

I haven’t seen this in years, but spotted it again and wanted to share it with you. I always enjoyed watching the Red Skelton show, but I can’t say I remember seeing this live in 1969.

Red Skelton, in this greatly beloved and much watched video recording, he tells us what the Pledge of Allegiance means.

  1. I’ve seen the words circulated around various Internet email lists, but I hadn’t seen this video. This is awesome. I was in the 9th grade when this aired, and my dad was a big Red Skelton fan; its odd that I don’t recall seeing this, but then, there’s not a lot about my teen years I remember anyway!

  2. Isn’t that good, Fred? When I spotted it, I told Deborah it had to be one of our Friday Flag Flicks. It speaks volumes, if anyone is willing to listen.

  3. Skeltons’ comments re: “under God” turning the pledge into a prayer were prescient indeed.

I wonder what he’d say about Michael Newdow and the ACLU if he were alive today?

  4. Like most Americans of that generation and the one before, they would be furious, I think. The WWI and WWII generations learned first-hand what the cost of freedom involved, and to witness its destruction would cause a lot of grief.

  5. Larry, if you haven’t seen this this short film, I think you’ll like it:

I’m watching it again right now, and I get a lump in my throat everytime I watch it. Its kinda long (11+ minutes) but well worth your time.

  6. What a great video, Fred. I’m passing it on to Deborah to view.
