Hoist the American Flag Briskly!

I’ve been browsing youtube looking for flag videos—raising, lowering, flying—and I’ve noticed a prevalent feature in many of the videos. Section 6(b) of the U.S. Flag Code says this.

(b) The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

The videos show people getting the lowering part right, but for some reason, people don’t hoist the American flag briskly. I wonder why that is?

I think part of it is the music that is played in some venues, while the flag is being raised. Many will play America the Beautiful or God Bless America, which are great songs, but lack a fast tempo, and they are very different from the military bugle call to hoist the flag.

These Boy Scouts do a good job, not only in briskly raising the flag, but properly half-staffing the flag also.

Here is the music to Reveille, that is played on the video.

If the music playing is slow, the flag is raised slowly. It’s human nature to stay in step with the beat. I guess we’re going to need a new flag-hoisting song that ROCKS! Or stick to bugles …

Any suggestions?
