Stars and Stripes on 1919 Allied Victory Stamp

Allied Victory StampAt the end of the world war in 1919, the U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp featuring the flags of the victorious allied nations behind an allegorical figure named “Goddess of Liberty Victorious,” who holds a sword in one hand and the Scales of Justice in the other.

The flags from left to right are Great Britain, Belgium, United States, Italy, and France. Issued on March 3, 1919, the violet, three-cent stamp can be bought today from two dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on quality, condition, and the shade of ink—with deep red violet being most highly prized.
